Kanzashi making workshop
Handmade kanzashi (hair ornaments)
Service Description
Kanzashi or originally known as Tsumami-zaiku involves folding and pinching square pieces of fabric to create individual petals, which are then combined to form flowers and other shapes. Using the traditional fabric we have provided, along with glue and tweezers, you can experience making a traditional kanzashi. Since no scissors or sharp tools are used, even those who are not very skilled with their hands, as well as children, can enjoy this craft. During the workshop, we have a break time where we can enjoy a cultural experience with matcha and sweets. "Tsumami-zaiku" is a traditional craft from the Edo period, where small pieces of fabric are folded and pinched to create various shapes. These shapes are then combined to form seasonal flowers, birds, and natural scenery, beautifully adorning combs and hairpins. With its charming and colorful appearance, tsumami-zaiku remains a popular hair accessory for Japanese events such as Shichi-Go-San, coming-of-age ceremonies, and weddings, continuing to adorn women's special days. While combs and hairpins crafted by artisans have gained popularity, in recent years, there has also been an increase in people who enjoy Japanese culture and make tsumami-zaiku as a hobby. Although tsumami-zaiku may seem difficult at first glance, it is created using two simple techniques. The rounded, gentle shapes of "maru-tsumami" and the slender, pointed shapes of "ken-tsumami" are applied, and by experimenting with different types of fabric, sizes, and colors, a variety of expressions are achieved. This technique is also used in the kanzashi worn by maiko (apprentice geisha).
